Strada Autumn 2009

  • Rivers Casino Opens on the North Shore

The Rivers Casino, which opened on August 9th, is the most recent project on Pittsburgh’s North Shore and is the newest outcome of the City’s 20-year-long plan to expand the downtown area. Developed by Holdings Acquisitions Co. LP, the design team was led by Las Vegas-based architecture firm Bergman Walls and Associates in collaboration with Strada for the exterior architecture. Strada was also the urban planner and landscape architect for the project. The casino overhauls a spectacular 12.6-acre riverfront brownfield site that housed a variety of industrial uses, ranging from a steel factory to railyards.

  • Ed Shriver to speak on Retail Ecology at Build Boston

Build Boston is the largest regional convention and tradeshow for the design and construction industry; November 18-20 at the Seaport World Trade Center
    in Boston.

“Retail Ecology”: The patterns and networks that make our cities thrive.
What causes shoppers to frequent a particular retail area? How can retail districts attract new customers? How can urban retail corridors succeed in today’s market? Like an ecosystem, an urban retail district is inhabited by two species: shoppers and retailers, which creates what Christopher Alexander called the “Living City”: “a large collection of many small systems [that] goes to make up a large and complex system.” It is, in fact, an ecosystem.
